"Swerve & Serve" Recap

On tonight's episode of 19 Kids and Counting, "Swerve & Serve"...
  • Running on Duggar Time, the family barely makes it to Little Rock in time for Friendly Chapel's annual fish fry. "It's like herding cats to get everyone out of here," Jim Bob tells the camera crew, as he shepherds each Duggar out the door.
  • While Josie was living at Arkansas Children's Hospital back in 2010, the Duggars attended services at Friendly Chapel. "This is our home away from home, and we love our church family here," says Michelle.
  • The Duggars are always up for a little fun, even while serving at a fish fry. "Jim Bob and I had a contest," explains Michelle. "We were trying to see who got the most trash in their bag." Although she spends much of her time chatting, the mom of many ends up collecting more garbage than her hubby.
  • Later, the Duggars head to a family arcade to celebrate Joy-Anna's 14th birthday and Johannah's 6th birthday. The entire family has a blast.
  • According to Jim Bob, there are many similarities between Johannah and Jana, who was an especially playful and energetic child.
  • Michelle has enjoyed watching Joy blossom: "Joy is pretty outgoing and will say what she thinks. She is becoming this beautiful young lady."
  • Arkansas teens can get behind the wheel at age fourteen. After receiving her learner's permit, Joy-Anna practices driving through obstacles and parallel parking with Michelle and Jill. At one point, Jill risks her life by holding up a stop sign. Thankfully, Joy comes to a complete stop.
  • Jim Bob and Michelle have taught nine of their children to drive. "We trust them, or else we wouldn't let them behind the wheel,"explains Michelle.

  1. I thought it was wonderful how Michelle took such an active role in Joy's first driving lesson. I noticed Jim holding on for dear life in the back seat during a couple jerky braking maneuvers. Haha! Great episode. :)

  2. Think you got a typo there. Jana isn't 6 =D Did you mean Johannah?

  3. I think you mean 6 year old Johannah, not six year old Jana :)

  4. That sentence didn't come out as clearly as we intended. :) Johannah is the spitting image of Jana at age six.

  6. I really like watching the show and have enjoyed watching the children grow over the years. I may not personally agree with everything they do or believe, but definitely defend their right to do it. My only grievance with the family comes from being on "Dugger time". I personally think that is rude and inconsiderate to everyone waiting on them. Not made as a big joke with a shrug of the shoulders and saying " we are on Dugger Time". The only time being on Dugger time is ok, is when it does not effect anyone else but the duggers. They should realize TV show or not, other peoples time is valuable and as important as theirs.
That being said, I wish the very best for this family, and many blessings to come.

  9. I thought Joy was more like Johannah but maybe Jana was too
unafair that Joy can drive I am the exact same age as her and cant get my permit until 16!!Needless to say she did a good job loved the expression on her face and Michelle is absouluty right. Joy is still playful but a amazing young lady and thats ok if she is full of energy .I can defentily see her in the eyes of her older sisters Jinger mostly.

  11. If any of these children ever work outside the family, I would like to be there when they explain to their boss and co-workers that they "are on Duggar time." Being on time is just a pure given of being considerate of others. Consistent tardiness is a combination of poor planning and laziness.

  13. @annonymous 6:13pm. I don't think any of the Duggars, especially the boys, will have to worry about explaining "Duggar time" to any prospective employers. I believe Gothard frowns on working for anyone besides family. The younger boys will end up working at Josh's car lot or John David's towing business or Jim Bob will start a business for them. The girls certainly don't need to worry about working for anyone. They are being trained to help raise their parent's blessing and then maybe have Jim Bob find them husbands and start working on having many blessings of their own. I don't believe the girls are encouraged to have a career of their own and if one of them did get a job, it would be hard enough explaining "Duggar time" in addition to having one of their male siblings chaperoning them at a job.

  14. I think this family (Duggars) has lost touch with reality.....which is the real world. And I am a Christian saying that.

  19. I am sadden by every negative comments about The Duggars esp about the girls and them being slaves of Michelle and Jim Bob! I think they want to live with the family and be close to their younger siblings and parents! The older girls are into other things out of the house like Jill and Jana are busy with the volunteer fire department! I am so glad the Duggars share their lives with us like they do and don't act like they are big stars!
